This seminar will outline and examine the profound changes in international media and communication during
the past decade -- what is often referred to by the catchphrase 'globalization'. In particular this course will
deal with the following questions:
- Who are the key players and stakeholders in international media and communication?
- What kinds of programmes and contents are distributed...
- ... for which markets and audiences?
- What are the impacts, and who benefits?
- What are the macro-economic, political, and cultural contexts of all these processes?
Examples will cover Europe, North America, China, India, the Arab World, sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America.
In this seminar participants will need to do a lot of reading and some research of their own. The concept of the 'active audience' will be
enforced. At least you won't be bored.
